The 4 Biggest Deal Breakers When Working With A Functional Medicine Practice

When it comes to our health, we all want to make sure that we’re making the best decisions possible. If you’re considering working with a functional medicine practice, here are four things you should keep in mind before making your decision.

Each functional medicine practice is unique, so be sure to ask around and do your research to find the right fit for you. Trustworthy recommendations from friends and family can be a great place to start!

I’m thrilled you’re considering functional medicine. To make sure that functional medicine is the right fit for you, please take a look at my top four deal-breakers when we’re working together.

  •  If you think you want a quick fix to your health, functional medicine is not the way

If you think you want a quick fix to your health, functional medicine is not for you. You’re going to have to invest some effort, time, and energy. You are going to have to meal plan. You need to spend more time doing things that you might not have spent a lot of time doing before. A quick fix is not going to work with functional medicine. But if you’re willing to put in the work, functional medicine can be an incredibly effective way to address chronic health issues. If you want to explore functional medicine, talk to your doctor or find a practitioner in your area. Otherwise, there’s no point in investing the effort, time, and energy required. Quick fixes are for people who don’t want to put in the work required for lasting change. If that’s not you, then good luck on your journey to better health.

  • If you are not open to consuming more protein after we assess what your current protein levels are

And guess what? This is typically something that we discover. We put in way too much sugar and not enough protein, especially as we age. And if we’re dealing with liver, stress, methylation issues, fatigue, or just trying to get to the root cause of what’s going on with our health, you need to be open to that.

If you are not open to consuming more protein after we assess what your current intake is, then we have to have a very serious conversation about your protein sources. Especially in consuming animal protein, it is an essential consideration. We need the Vitamin B12 from the animal stores to get into the methylation pathway, optimize function, help with liver detox, and excrete the toxins that we breathe in and inhale and eat daily. If you’re not getting proper amounts of clean animal protein, you’re going to be deficient in B12 which can present as neurological problems down the road.

  • If you think supplements won’t work, or if you’re just not open to bringing supplementation into your lifestyle

We need to make sure that the right nutrient status gets repleted back into your body to help your tissue. The whole goal of functional medicine is to rebuild your tissue, retrain your body, and get you optimally healthy.

And so we need to bring the right nutrients in. We find which ones are going to be, and we stage them. There are different phases. This is typically not something that you’d be on long-term, but this is an intervention to your health. You have to be open to taking the nutrients that are going be customized for you.

  • If you’re not willing to commit at least six months to your health

Functional medicine is not a one-and-done type of deal. If you’re not willing to commit at least six months to your health, then functional medicine is not for you. That’s because functional medicine is an investment in your health that requires time and commitment. We’ll be working together closely to gather data, do testing, and look at the right supplementation. And if you’re not able to commit the time or investment into your health, then we’re not going to be a good fit.

If you can check off every point on this list, then we’d love to help you get started on your functional medicine journey. However, if you think you want a quick fix to your health woes or are not open to making some changes in your lifestyle, functional medicine is probably not the right approach for you.
