Do you ever feel like you can’t keep your eyes open after lunch? That dragging feeling that seems to cripple your productivity and makes it hard just to stay awake? Do you find yourself already irritable when the kids get home from school? Why do often drive by Starbucks? You’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from afternoon fatigue, but the good news is there are some easy ways to fight back against it. In this post, we’re going to take a look at the real reasons why you get tired in the afternoon, and some tips on how to fix it. Let’s get started!
Myths to be debunked
I have seen this a lot in my practice: people coming in complaining of fatigue, especially in the afternoon. There are three myths about why people think that they’re fatigued.
- It has something to do with genetics.
You have dealt with some genetic concerns. Your mom, dad, or sister always got tired. Everyone gets tired at 3:00 PM in your house and your family and in your genetics. And so, you’re just destined to get tired too.
- It’s your thyroid.
Probably, you haven’t had your thyroid checked. This is for those of you who are not dealing with thyroid things and think it might be your thyroid. We think: blame it on the thyroid. Why not? We will sometimes say, “ It’s that thyroid that really gets me down in the afternoon.”
- You’re not getting enough sleep.
People come to me complaining of fatigue, and when I ask them how much sleep they’re getting, they often say, “Oh, I’m getting enough sleep.” But when I ask them how much sleep they think they need, they say, “Oh, I need at least eight hours.” So, if you’re getting enough sleep, and you’re still tired, it’s not because you need more sleep.
These are all valid things to look into. Genetics are important. The thyroid and sleep are really important. But, they are the most common myths that people think they are fatigued in the afternoon.
Here are the three reasons why people are actually tired in the afternoon
- You’re starting the day off with sugar.
Are you starting the day off with sugar? This can really cause these up and downs of blood sugar and you’re crashing in the afternoon. When you start off the day with sugar alone: oatmeal, cereal, a bagel, sugary coffee, donuts, it can lead to an afternoon fatigue.
- You’re not eating enough protein. or you’re vegan.
Protein is really important to balance that blood sugar out. Possibly, you’re just skipping the protein or you just don’t like eating protein. Maybe you are a vegan. We have to think about ways to get protein into our diet, to help with that afternoon fatigue.
- You’re not drinking enough mineralized water.
Hydration is very important for brain function, cellular function, and detoxification. More importantly, you need to stay hydrated in order to combat that afternoon slump where you’re relying on things to happen.
If you’ve been drinking coffee, sodas, or teas all morning, and you’re not drinking water, then the afternoon slump is a consequence. We need to bring back the mineralized water to help the brain function in the afternoon.
Those are my top three things that you can consider altering to help decrease the amount of afternoon fatigue that you have. Don’t start the day off with sugar, eat enough protein, and drink enough mineralized water. A little tip about water; Purified water is different from spring water. Purified water doesn’t have the minerals. It’s totally stripped off of other components, hence, it’s called ‘purified’. Springwater on the other hand has minerals and is going to be your optimal choice if you’re hopping in buying the different types of water.
